Butterfly.

A few pictures of my day yesterday is all I’ve got for now.

It was hot and I spent most of the day checking in with livestock.

It was kindof a rough day for parenting. The kind of day that makes you feel like you aren’t doing enough, even though you know the big picture is doing fine.

It will be a hot one again today, and we are bringing watermelon and live bait out to our friends who live on the river. Our boys can go fishing and we can all cool off a bit.

It will be a nice break.

This particular barn cat is ALWAYS hanging with the chickens. I like to think of him as my flock protection cat, although I have my suspicions about his actual protection abilities. He is very sweet and sensitive…my friend refers to him as our “extra fancy” barn cat, soooooooo……

Carl the turkey lodged a complaint about the high temperatures. Sorry, Carl. This too shall pass.

We did have a really lovely period of time when this butterfly came to visit us.

I rigged up a sprinkler/mister to keep horses cool, and they cowered on the other end of the pasture for the next 6 hours, so I finally took mercy on them and disassembled it.

I moved it to the back patio so I could cool off the individuals who might actually use it, and to our surprise, it attracted a whole mess of dragonflies and butterflies. We kept trying to rescue them from what sure seemed to be drowning, but after about 7,456 of them left dry land to fly right back to it, we figured they knew best and that they too appreciated the cool down.

This guy was special, being as how he was huge and beautiful, but also because he was missing a few key body parts, like legs and wing bits.

The Boy and I talked about how he probably didn’t have that much time left considering the shape he was in, and it felt very meaningful that he spent so much time with us. We are also coming up on the first anniversary of a significant death on my dads side of the family, and though I’ve never personally associated butterflies with those who have passed away I have heard a lot of people do, so it definitely entered my mind that it could have been a short & sweet “hi” from beyond. 💙

…and since I can’t seem to write more than one post at a time without mentioning orange cats, here are a couple of them relaxing after a long, arduous day of fulfilling their cat-duties by diligently ensuring the outbuildings are free of mice and other pests.

I’m just kidding. They loused around here all day, belly aching about the crummy service and lack of food deliveries right to their mouths.
